Three routes, in order of reliability: a USB stick plugged into the television, casting from a phone or laptop, or a media server on a computer. Whichever you choose, the decision that matters happens earlier — download MP4 with H.264, because televisions update rarely and are the pickiest devices in most homes.

Download the right thing first

This is the step that determines whether the rest works, and it happens before the television is involved at all.

A television is not a computer that happens to have a screen. Its media player is firmware, written once, rarely updated, and it fails silently — a file it cannot handle simply does not appear in the list, with no explanation.

Which is why the newest codec is the wrong choice here even though the file is smaller. The codec comparison covers the trade; on a TV the answer is almost always the oldest, most compatible option.

Route one: a USB stick

The most reliable method, and the only one that needs no network at all.

  1. Format the stick as exFAT or FAT32. exFAT for files over 4 GB, FAT32 for the widest compatibility with older sets.
  2. Copy the files to the root or a single plain folder. Deeply nested folders confuse some televisions.
  3. Plug it in and switch to the USB or Media source on the TV's input menu.
  4. Browse to the file. If it does not appear, the television cannot read the format — the file is fine.

The 4 GB limit on FAT32 catches people with long videos. A two-hour film at 1080p can exceed it, and the copy fails with an unhelpful message about the file being too large.

Some televisions also cap how many files they will list in a folder, or refuse non-Latin characters in names. If a file is missing from the list, renaming it to something short and plain is worth trying before concluding anything.

Route two: casting

Convenient when it works, and it depends on what you own.

Chromecast and Google TV can play a local file through the Google Home app or a compatible player app on the phone. AirPlay does the same from an iPhone, iPad or Mac to an AirPlay-capable television. Miracast and screen mirroring work more broadly but mirror the whole screen, which drains the phone and interrupts on notifications.

The catch with casting a downloaded file is that the phone is doing the work — decoding, sometimes transcoding, and sending over Wi-Fi. On a weak connection it stutters, and on a phone with a low battery it stops.

For a single video it is the quickest route. For an evening's viewing, a USB stick is less trouble and better quality.

Route three: a media server

The right answer if you do this regularly and have a computer that stays on.

Software like Plex or Jellyfin runs on a computer, indexes a folder of videos, and presents them to the television as an app with artwork and resume-where-you-left-off. Most smart TVs have a client app; so do consoles and streaming boxes.

The significant advantage is transcoding. If the television cannot handle a file's codec, the server converts it on the fly, which means the compatibility problem largely disappears — you can keep the efficient version and still watch it anywhere.

The cost is setup and a machine left running. For someone with a handful of videos it is vastly more than the task needs; for someone with a collection it is the difference between an archive and a folder.

One thing worth knowing before committing to it: transcoding is demanding. A server converting 1080p on the fly needs a reasonably capable processor, and an old laptop pressed into service will stutter on exactly the files you wanted it for. Downloading in a TV-friendly format in the first place avoids the transcode entirely and works on any hardware — which is the theme of this entire article.

A fourth route worth knowing: the TV's own browser

Most smart televisions include a web browser, and it is almost always the wrong tool for this — worth explaining because people try it first.

Those browsers are cut-down, slow to type into with a remote control, and frequently cannot download files at all: there is nowhere on the television to put them. Even where a download appears to work, the file usually lands somewhere the media player does not look.

The exception is a streaming box or console with a fuller browser and attached storage, where it behaves more like a computer. On an ordinary television, downloading on a phone and moving the file across is faster than typing a single URL with a directional pad.

There is a related trap with television apps that promise media playback from the internet. On a platform where app review is thin, those are exactly the category worth avoiding — a television is a device most people never audit, rarely update and cannot easily inspect.

When the file will not play

An easy check before blaming the television: play the same file on a laptop or phone. If it plays there and not on the TV, the file is fine and the television lacks a decoder. If it fails on both, the download itself is the problem and re-downloading is worth trying.

Notice that every one of these is fixed at download time rather than at the television. That is the general shape of the problem: a TV gives you no diagnostics, so the sensible strategy is to hand it something it is very likely to accept.

What quality is actually worth it

Televisions are where higher resolution genuinely matters — the opposite of phones — but there is still a ceiling worth respecting.

On a normal-sized set at normal viewing distance, 1080p is excellent and the step to 4K is subtle. Given that a 4K file is several times larger, may exceed a USB drive's practical limits, and is not supported by every television's media player, 1080p is usually the better trade.

720p is noticeably soft on a large screen in a way it never is on a phone. This is the one context where taking a step up is worth the storage, and where the quality-versus-size reasoning that applies to mobile (covered here) points the other way.

Above all, do not download 4K for a television you have not confirmed will play it over USB. Many will stream 4K from an app and refuse the same resolution from a stick, because those are two different pieces of software inside the same box.

Why our default preference exists for exactly this case

Televisions are the reason our format selector is written the way it is, and this article is the clearest place to explain a decision that costs us on paper.

When we assemble a file, we ask the platform for the requested resolution preferring H.264, and only fall back to newer codecs when H.264 does not exist at that quality. A tool optimising for the smallest file would invert that and take AV1 wherever it is offered — smaller downloads, faster transfers, better-looking numbers.

We chose otherwise because of where downloads end up. A large share of them do not stay on the device that fetched them: they get moved to a laptop, copied to a memory stick, played on a television, dropped into an editor. The phone in your hand may be new; the television it will be plugged into is eight years old and its media player was written before the codec existed.

The asymmetry of the mistake settles it. Serving H.264 to someone with modern hardware costs them a slightly larger file and they notice nothing. Serving AV1 to someone whose destination is a television produces a file that does not appear in the list at all — no error, no explanation, just an absence. One of those failures is recoverable and one of them looks like the download never worked.

The honest cost: our files are sometimes larger than the theoretical minimum, and on a current device you could have saved storage by taking the newer codec elsewhere. We think a download that plays on the oldest thing in your house is worth more than one that is optimally compressed — and when a platform only offers newer codecs at a given quality, you get those, because that is what exists.

The same reasoning explains why every video option in our list is MP4 rather than whatever container the platform happened to use. WEBM is a perfectly good format and it is the one several platforms serve natively — it is also the one a television is most likely to ignore, and repackaging into MP4 costs nothing, because the container is a wrapper rather than the picture. Nothing is re-encoded to achieve it.
