Downloader Apps vs Web Tools

The difference is not how careful each one promises to be — it is how much each one can see. A web page sees the link you paste and nothing else. An installed app sees whatever permissions you granted, keeps them until you remove it, and can change what it does with them in an update you never read. That gap is structural, and it does not depend on anyone being honest.

Read the last column carefully. Extensions look like the lightweight option and are frequently the most exposed of the three, because the permission they need to find a video on a page is the permission to read every page.

The problem is not today's version
Most privacy discussions ask whether a tool is trustworthy now. The more useful question is what happens to that trust over time, because permissions persist and code does not.
An app or extension updates automatically. Ownership changes hands without announcement. A tool that behaved impeccably for three years can ship an update that behaves differently — using access thousands of people granted years earlier, for something else entirely.
This has happened repeatedly across the extension ecosystem, and the pattern is consistent: a useful free tool builds an install base, the install base is the asset, and the asset gets sold. Nobody who installed it did anything wrong.
A web page cannot follow that path. There is no permission to inherit and no install base to sell. If the page changed tomorrow, it would still only see what you paste into it tomorrow.
Where an app is genuinely the better tool
This is not an argument that apps are bad. Several jobs need one:
- Bulk work. Hundreds of videos with queueing, resume and retries. No web page does this well.
- Scheduled or unattended jobs. Anything that should run without you watching.
- Saving directly to a phone's photo library. A web page cannot write there on iOS. Only an app can, which is the one-step convenience it buys.
- Working offline from a queue. A browser tab is a poor place to park a hundred pending tasks.
- Unusual formats and fine control. Command-line tools expose options no web interface reasonably could.
The trade is real and it is a trade. An app that writes to your photo library has your photo library. If the job justifies that, install it deliberately — from a source you can identify, ideally open-source, and remove it when the job is done.
How to evaluate one before installing
- Read the permission list, not the description. A downloader wanting contacts, location or microphone is telling you what it is for.
- Find out who publishes it. A company with a name and an address is accountable in a way that an anonymous developer account is not.
- Check the update history. A tool abandoned two years ago is not being patched, whatever its rating says.
- Read the recent reviews, not the average. The score reflects the version people liked; the newest reviews reflect the version you will get.
- Prefer open source when it exists. Not a guarantee, but it means the behaviour can be checked by someone other than the author.
Step one filters most bad options in seconds. A video downloader has no legitimate use for your contact list, and one that asks is not a downloader with an odd feature — it is something else with a downloader attached.
Where web tools are genuinely worse
To be even-handed, the page has real disadvantages and pretending otherwise would undermine the rest of this:
You are trusting a server. A web downloader processes your link on someone else's machine. A local application does the work on your device and the link may never leave it. For the genuinely privacy-maximal option, a local open-source tool beats any website, ours included.
The site can change without you noticing. No update prompt, no version number. What you used last month may not be what you use today.
Nothing works offline. Obvious, and occasionally decisive.
Ad-supported sites are a category of their own. A page carrying nine advertising trackers has handed your visit to nine companies before you did anything. The structural advantage of a web page only holds if the page is not itself an advertising product — which is what to check.

Most people are in the first row almost all the time, which is worth noticing before installing something for a task performed twice a month.
The last row deserves a mention because it is easy to overlook. On a borrowed laptop, a library machine, a work computer or a friend's phone, installing anything is either not permitted or not polite. A page leaves no trace beyond a line in the browser history, which is exactly the right footprint on a device that is not yours.
And there is a middle path people rarely consider: use both, for different jobs. A web page for the ordinary case, a local tool kept for the occasional archive job, installed deliberately and removed when it is finished. Treating the choice as a permanent allegiance to one approach is what leads to an app on the home screen that gets used twice a year and holds a permission the whole time.
The app we keep not building
We are asked for an app regularly, and the honest answer is that we have decided against it more than once — so it is fairer to explain the reasoning than to keep saying ‘maybe later’.
The commercial case is strong. An app sits on the home screen instead of being a site somebody has to remember. It creates habit. It can save to the camera roll in one step instead of the two that iOS forces on a web page. It has push notifications, an install base, and a review score that compounds. Every growth argument points at building one.
What stops us is the permission conversation it requires. For the one-step camera roll save, an app asks for access to your photo library. Not to add one file — that is not how the permission works. It asks for the library, and once granted, that access persists across every future version of the app regardless of who is maintaining it by then.
We would be asking for that to save one tap on a task most people perform a few times a month. Weighed against a permission that outlives the reason it was granted, one tap is not much. And we are not in a position to promise how our own product will be run in five years — which is precisely why a promise is the wrong thing to be relying on.
There is a version of this that would change the calculation: a permission scoped to adding files without reading existing ones, granted per save rather than permanently. Some of that exists in narrow forms on some platforms. It is not broadly available, and until it is, the honest position is that the web page is limited by the same thing that makes it safe.
Meanwhile the alternative is worth naming plainly: if you want a downloader on your device and are comfortable with what that involves, use a reputable open-source one. That is better advice than waiting for an app we have twice decided not to build, and it does not route your links through anyone's server, including ours.
